Si l’auteur de l’article reconnaît que « to tell this story in dramatic terms, M. Gide and M. Barrault have worked out a production that is a technical splendor », il se fait l’écho des critiques négatives : « The great complaint here against "The Trial" is that as a show it does not play fair with its audience » et, plus loin : « Despite the fact that these people have become accustemed to the illogical pranks of Giraudoux and applauding a surrealist play by Audiberti, they rightfully cling to the old Gallic notion that in the theatre, at least, the writer must make some kind of sense ».
